Aspergillus was named by Pier Antonio Micheli, an Italian priest and biologist. The molds resembled an aspergillum, a holy water sprinkler.

The renowned scientist was the son of Pier Francesco Micheli, a laborer, and married to Maria Salvucci. He grew up in poor conditions and attended only elementary school, but was noted for his special interest in plants.
Since Micheli could not afford any secondary education, he was employed as a gardener in the "Orto Botanico di Firenze" (Florence Botanical Garden). There he soon became the assistant of Michelangelo Tilli, professor of botany and head of the botanical garden, which he later supervised and developed independently.
