Types of Aspergillus infection

Post by auntiebi0tics »

There are approximately 180 species of Aspergillus, but fewer than 40 of them are known to cause infections in humans. Aspergillus fumigatus is the most common cause of human Aspergillus infections. Other common species include A. flavus, A. terreus, and A. niger.

Aspergillus is a genus of mold (fungus) that is commonly found in the environment, including in soil, decaying vegetation, and compost heaps. Most people inhale Aspergillus spores every day without getting sick, but in some people, it can cause health problems.

There are several different types of Aspergillus infections, including:

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA): This is an allergic reaction to Aspergillus that can cause asthma-like symptoms, such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.
More at What is ABPA

Aspergilloma: This is a fungal ball that can grow in the lungs of people with pre-existing lung conditions, such as tuberculosis or cystic fibrosis.
(during the research I found out I have Aspergilloma, my doctors have always stated I had a fungal ball but have never used it PROPER NAME!)

Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis: This is a rare type of lung infection that can cause coughing, fever, and weight loss.

Invasive aspergillosis: This is a serious infection that can spread to other organs, such as the brain, kidneys, and heart. It is most common in people with weakened immune systems, such as people with HIV/AIDS or cancer.

If you are concerned about Aspergillus, it is important to see a doctor.
They can diagnose the type of infection you have and recommend treatment.
“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
